The Addams Family Called Karl Lagerfeld

Stop the Presses! Call the Fashion Police!!!!! The man who said that one of the most incredible singers of all time, Adele, was too fat for his tastes, has been spotted in New York City. And he's NOT WEARING BLACK! What happened? Did the Addams Family call and ask for their wardrobes back?
On the other hand, this could be Karl's parallel universe Halloween costume. This is how Fashionologie.com, the source of this photo put it: "Whatever happened to all black everything? It's rare to see Karl Lagerfeld wearing an ensemble that isn't predominantly black, but the Kaiser was spotted in New York's SoHo neighborhood on Tuesday wearing head-to-toe olive. He paired his green tweed suit with his customary high white collar and fingerless driving gloves and affixed an oversize bumblebee brooch to his blue and brown striped tie.
Lagerfeld once said that he sticks to black because 'in black you can forget about yourself. I don't think about myself when I am looking at materials and doing fittings . . . When you work in fashion, and you have to work with all the colours, you can't be there in green, pink or something very fancy, because, in the end, you have the feeling that you are just a sample yourself."

Barbie, Now With Natural Hair, Under Certain Circumstances

Thanks to an enterprising woman in Georgia and her group of friends, little girls around that state's city of Columbus will receive an exclusive Barbie this Christmas. A Barbie that's not available in any store.  Well, actually, it kind of is. From the Columbus, GA Ledger-Enquirer:
"Candace McBride remembers wanting a Barbie doll as a girl.
'It’s kind of an iconic doll. Every girl wants a Barbie. I wanted a Barbie when I was a girl,'she said.
"This Christmas, she’s hoping to give a few girls their own Barbies -- ones that look a little more like them."McBride is part of an African-American natural hair group that meets regularly at the Columbus public library that decided to give Barbie dolls to girls at Booker T. Washington apartments for Christmas. Though Barbie comes in 50 different nationalities, most of the dolls, even the African-Americans ones have straight hair.
“When you look for dolls, they all have straight hair,” she said, adding that she’s noticed that many of the dolls also have blue or green eyes. “It’s tricky even to find ones with brown eyes,” she said.
She found an online tutorial that uses pipe cleaners and boiling water to give Barbie natural-looking curls. After they collect the dolls -- they want to gather about 40 -- group members will give them a natural hair makeover before giving them to the girls."
This project certainly grabbed our attention.  Barbie is a big part of the socio-cultural consciousness of young girls as well as the rest of society.  She has always been a bell-weather of style and at least these women in Georgia believe that now is a great time for Black girls' hair to go "au naturel."

As Seen at the U.S. Open Sept. 2009 in New York City

The U.S. Open is absolutely amazing for those attending. The audience is treated to an up-close and personal view of the greatest names in tennis on the planet. Phoebe noticed that a number of women dressed to attend the evening matches were wearig all-black with all accessroies in gold tones. Elegant and easy at the same! Fortunately for most of us, we don't have to buy anything new to pull this off--unless you want to!

Remembering Naomi Sims

Farewell but not forgotten: Naomi Sims, the first black supermodel to be featured on a cover of a magazine in 1968 and who went on to grace the covers of numerous magazines & fashion layouts with her beautiful face & long limbs, died over the weekend at her home in Newark at 61. After retiring from modeling, she became a successful businesswoman.
As a model, she often did her own hair and makeup, since many studio assistants were unfamiliar with working with darker skin. And she noticed that most commercially available wigs were designed for Caucasian hair, so she began experimenting with her own designs, baking synthetic hairs in her oven at home to create the right texture to look like straightened black hair. Within five years, her designs, produced by the Metropa Company, had annual sales of $5 million.
She will be missed and remembered.
