Remembering Naomi Sims

Farewell but not forgotten: Naomi Sims, the first black supermodel to be featured on a cover of a magazine in 1968 and who went on to grace the covers of numerous magazines & fashion layouts with her beautiful face & long limbs, died over the weekend at her home in Newark at 61. After retiring from modeling, she became a successful businesswoman.
As a model, she often did her own hair and makeup, since many studio assistants were unfamiliar with working with darker skin. And she noticed that most commercially available wigs were designed for Caucasian hair, so she began experimenting with her own designs, baking synthetic hairs in her oven at home to create the right texture to look like straightened black hair. Within five years, her designs, produced by the Metropa Company, had annual sales of $5 million.
She will be missed and remembered.

Head Over Heels, Literally

Barbara and Phoebe discuss the finer points of wearing shoes on one's head, as did the Eric Tibusch models at the recent Haute Couture Paris Fashion show. Cinderella doesn't have to worry if the Prince has a GPS in his car or on his phone so that he may find her when she leaves a shoe behind in her run to make curfew.

Joan Makes Us Moan (talkin' about her Fake Face), but Iman & Carmen are Charming and Alarmingly Beautiful and au Naturelle

In the June 2 edition of The Huffington Post, Lesley M.M. Blume writes: "I just saw a recent picture of comedienne Joan Rivers that made me want to throw up. Her face is now stretched tighter than a piano string; her mouth and snout bear more than a passing resemblance to that grotesque 'cat-woman,'Jocelyn Wildenstein." She goes on to profile women who have not had plastic surgery and even if they are 50 years and older, look fabulous! This list includes the absolutely stunning Iman, Gloria Steinam, Sophia Loren and gorgeous model Carmen Del Orefice who is 78 years old and still modeling.

Pure elegance and amazingness, these women. Read the full story on the always informative website, The Huffington Post.
