Shoes, Architecture. Architecture, Shoes.

J.M. Weston shoes have been made in Limoges, France since 1891. The shoes are handled between 150 and 190 times in order to reproduce exactly the original techniques and craftsmanship of the founder, Eugene Blanchard. The company invited architect Frank Gehry, Dior Homme creative director Kris van Assche, shoe designer Michael Perry, industrial designer Martin Szekely and gallerist Clemence Krzentowski to design shoes for fall '09.
Gehry's shoe is described as "The encounter of a 19th century dandy and a 60s mod."
You may remember our reference to Frank Gehry as the designer of Tiffany earrings worn by tennis player Maria Sharapova at the U.S. Open.

Italians and Advertising: Subliminal, Subconscious, Subversive, Sublime, Seductive

This advert for Tods is so seriously Italian! Subliminal, Subconscious, Subversive, Sublime, Seductive and all at the same time. Just like Donatella! "We" probably don't know who these guys are, what they have in common or do for a living, why they are together or what the connection is to the shoes, especially the desert boots, which Barbara and Phoebe vlogged about a couple of months ago. All "we" know is that they have nice teeth, nice suits and are having a grand time. Makes you want to rush right out, be Italian, put your pinstripes on and buy some shoes.

Waiting For The Other Shoe to Drop!!!

TwinSpeak: Zaha Hadid, architect and designer extraordinaire, has designed this "Roman Gladiator meets 21st century" shoe/sandal for Lacoste. We love Zaha and her vision and style. According to Lola, (top photo), Zaha is welcome to visit Chihuahua Heaven anytime. Yes, we issue one-day passes up here for Human People.
However, if you only have one shoe, you can always wear it on your head and say you're from France. See our blog post of August 1, 2009 for more information.

Head Over Heels, Literally
Barbara and Phoebe discuss the finer points of wearing shoes on one's head, as did the Eric Tibusch models at the recent Haute Couture Paris Fashion show. Cinderella doesn't have to worry if the Prince has a GPS in his car or on his phone so that he may find her when she leaves a shoe behind in her run to make curfew.

Plants, Shoes, Africa and Jewellry

Inspiration from nature is a wondrous thing. You can see it in the design of many ordinary items in everyday life. The “clam shell” mobile phone is based on the way the shells of clams open and close and the way they are hinged. The painting of a shoe and the plant above share similar colors, shapes and a similar feeling of effortless elegance. The glass artist Dale Chihuly’s work is a mind-bending celebration of shapes and colors from nature and the dream world. Michelle Obama wears the delightful, exquisitely detailed jewelry of St Erasmus which evokes the continent of Africa in all of its visual glories.

The Power of Art and Culture Bring Us Together

"America's artistic contributions, especially its music, are universally embraced by other cultures, pushing aside their own indigenous music and adopting ours as their Esperanto. But today, we sit as one of two Western nations in the world without a Minister of Culture. When Jaime Austria and Peter Weitzner, two New York musicians, took the initiative after hearing a radio interview that I did several months ago to create an on-line petition calling for the appointment of a Secretary of the Arts -- an idea which I had originally suggested more than 10 years ago -- my belief in the power of the arts to bring people together for a common cause was reaffirmed yet again as the petition gained steam across America with an enormous outpouring of support."
